2nd-placing entry for the first LLLDC, with a few changes

It was a dark and stormy night in the town of Wollstonecraft. The day before, a mysterious man and his wife had moved into the largest house in the village. They were never seen again. Soon, an unknown and incurable illness spread throughout the rest of the townsfolk. Many people died of this. Others left the town never to return, and mercifully the illness did not spread with them. Still others simply disappeared. Within months, the town was abandoned. The land became barren, and eventually all memory of the village and the strangers was forgotten. Decades have passed. Another mysterious figure has come to the town: this time, alone, except for the sword they carry. Who is this person? Why have they come? Why is their face perpetually hidden in their hood? Why do I suck so much at writing?
